GHK-Cu for Hair: What the Science Says

GHK-Cu copper peptide hair growth serum in a scientific laboratory setting with scalp treatment and advanced hair restoration technology.

Alongside its well-established role in skincare, GHK-Cu has attracted growing interest for its potential in scalp and hair routines. Copper is an essential mineral for several biological processes that support healthy hair and scalp, and GHK-Cu — as a bioavailable delivery mechanism for copper — has become a popular addition to the haircare routines of those looking to support their scalp health from the outside in.

Here’s what we know, what the science says, and how to use it correctly as a topical cosmetic application.

Why Copper Matters for the Scalp

Copper plays several roles in the scalp’s biology. It is a co-factor for melanin production (the pigment that gives hair its colour), and it supports the structural integrity of keratin — the protein that hair is primarily composed of. Copper also has a role in the enzymatic processes that maintain the health of the tissue surrounding hair follicles.

GHK-Cu’s advantage over other copper sources in a topical product is bioavailability: the tripeptide structure makes copper far easier for cells to access than ionic copper alone, and the peptide itself appears to have its own signalling properties beyond simply delivering the mineral.

What the Research Suggests

Published laboratory studies have explored GHK-Cu’s effect on hair follicle biology. Research from Pyo et al. demonstrated that copper tripeptides stimulate dermal papilla cell activity — the cells at the base of each follicle that play a central role in hair growth cycles. Other work has examined GHK-Cu’s potential to support the anagen (active growth) phase of the hair cycle, suggesting it may extend the period during which follicles are actively producing hair.

A small-scale pilot study found that participants applying a dilute GHK-Cu topical solution to the scalp reported increased hair density after several months of use, with a higher proportion of follicles in the active growth phase on examination. However, it is important to note that this remains early-stage research — the study was small, and no claims about GHK-Cu as a treatment for hair loss are made or implied.

Important: GHK-Cu is a cosmetic ingredient for topical external use. It is not a licensed treatment for any form of hair loss. Anyone experiencing significant or unexplained hair shedding should consult their GP to investigate the underlying cause.

How to Apply GHK-Cu to the Scalp

Our GHK-Cu is designed for topical cosmetic use on skin and can be applied to the scalp in the same way as a leave-in scalp serum:

  1. Reconstitute the GHK-Cu powder with the supplied mixing solution as normal (see our How to Use GHK-Cu guide).
  2. Part the hair in sections to expose the scalp.
  3. Apply the solution directly to the scalp using a cotton pad, dropper or fingertip.
  4. Massage gently into the scalp for 1–2 minutes using circular motions.
  5. Do not rinse out. Style as normal.

Use once daily or on alternate days. Many customers apply GHK-Cu to both the face and scalp in the same routine, making one vial work across multiple areas.

Copper and Hair Colour

Copper’s role in melanin synthesis has made GHK-Cu interesting to those concerned about premature greying, which is associated in some studies with lower copper availability in the scalp. While we make no cosmetic claims about reversing grey hair, supporting optimal copper levels in scalp tissue through topical application is a popular approach among those exploring preventive scalp care.

What to Expect & How Long it Takes

As with skin applications, the scalp responds to GHK-Cu gradually. Most people notice improvements in scalp condition — less dryness, reduced sensitivity — within the first few weeks. Changes in hair quality or density, if they occur, typically become apparent after 2–3 months of consistent daily use.

Consistency matters more than anything else. A few applications followed by weeks of inactivity will not produce meaningful results. Build it into your daily routine the same way you would any other topical cosmetic.

One product, two uses.
